IRESSEF (Institut de Recherche en Santé, de Surveillance Epidémiologique et de Formation), in collaboration with ThermoFisher Scientific organized a training on Next Generation Sequencing or NGS techniques and particularly on the Ion GeneStudio S5 technology. This training which took place over three days brought together researchers, biologists, engineers and laboratory technicians to strengthen their capacities for a better use of these technologies in the fields of Research and Diagnostics.
The objectives of this training were to enable participants to understand the fundamentals of “Ion Torrent” technology and master the functionalities of the “Ion Chef” and “Ion GeneStudio S5” platform.
Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) is a high throughput methodology that enables rapid sequencing of DNA or RNA. The NGS is driving discovery and allows the future of personalized medicine. It supports a wide range of applications including: Human Identification; Food Safety; Profiling of Gene Expression, Research on Cancers, Infectious Diseases, Human Genetics (Inherited Diseases, Chromosome Counting, HLA Typing), Microbiome, Reproductive Health (Aneuploidy Detection, Congenital Diseases), etc.
It should also be noted that the acquisition of the NGS is the result of a partnership between Iressef and Africa CDC for the implementation of a new generation sequencing platform and advanced molecular diagnostics.
