The Institute for Health Research, Epidemiological Surveillance and Training (Iressef) will allow the establishment of a Demographic and Health Monitoring Center (DSS) in the rural community of Sandiara announced Monday in Diamniadio, its President Director General (CEO), Professor Souleymane Mboup.
“This will be the first DSS initiated and led by nationals to be recognized by the international network INDEPTH,” said Professor Mboup.
Its realization will be possible with the “unique model of community partnership” with the people of Sandiara, especially with their mayor, Dr. Serigne Guèye Diop, said the CEO of Iressef.
Professor Souleymane Mboup was speaking on the occasion of the inauguration of Iressef, in Diamniadio by the President of the Republic Macky Sall, in the presence of several world health researchers.
According to him, L’Iressef privileges, in his interventions, four poles of activities which are: the formation, the surveillance of the diseases, the research and the Diagnosis.
“The Iressef is also 122 start-up jobs, researchers, administrative and technical staff.Our strategic plan provides for a tripling of this workforce before the end of the fifth year of activities,” said Professor Mboup.
“By initiating this project as a logical continuation of our academic career, our ambition was nothing more than to help fill a gap: the need to set up a platform of excellence for the practice and teaching of research. health in Africa, “he explained.
According to Michel Sidibé, executive director of UNAIDS, “this research center is essential and this institute will enable us to ensure that research is not held hostage by the North.” What is important is to build bridges with the north “.
Mr Sidibé pointed out that “25% of the weight of the global disease is in Africa and we only have 3% of health workers on the continent and almost 1% of researchers are on the continent “.
The Executive Director of UNAIDS also noted that “only 3% of the medicines we consume are produced by the continent, so it is important that in this new partnership we can produce our own medicines and do our own research. that respond to our pathologies “.
Prof. Souleymane Mboup and his counterparts, Dr. John Martin, Prof. François Denis and Dr. John Nkengason were honored by President Sall, in recognition of their commitment to the development of Health Science in Africa.
